
Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter of Josephine Ormond, a laboratory technician , as is John Ormond. She is the second of five children to her parents. She went to private school, first Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School, where early stage performances like Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady started to attract attention. After a single year of art college, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Her graduation was in 1988. Ormond first appeared in British television in the 1989 serial Traffik The story revolves around the illicit heroin trade from the Far East to the streets of Europe. Ormond played the addict child of the leading character, the Home Office minister working to combat heroin importation. It was the first time Ormond had a role and received glowing reviews.
